LOCKDOWN WALKS 2020

“In late March 2020, the spread of the Coronavirus COVID-19 virus led the UK government to impose a lockdown of the entire UK population that was to impact on our freedom of movement and our ability to work and engage in economic activity. Though continuing to work from home, I started going on extended daily walks with my wife, Janet Knudsen, as part of the allowed daily exercise allocation. As I wear a camera, in the same way I wear a piece of clothing, I was able to take advantage of this challenge to my normal habits and freedoms to reacquaint myself and rediscover my local environments in Todmorden, West Yorkshire. One of the most difficult things to photograph, I find, is that which is close to you and very familiar, even mundane. During April and May 2020, re-discovering the footpaths and walking routes close to my house – and discovering some new ones, too – allowed me to explore imagery of the mundane everyday that stirred feelings evoked by the sudden and extraordinary moment of social and economic paralysis.” Erik Knudsen.
